Love, to love and to be loved, is the greatest human value, and so it should not surprise us that nothing costs more. The greater the love, the greater the cost. This is true of discipleship, which is essentially the mutual or reciprocal love between us and Jesus. Here the costs are very high. That is probably why we are afraid to pray, to pray not in the sense of asking for things but in the sense of deepening our personal intimacy with Jesus. For Jesus said, “if a man wishes to come after me, he must deny his very self, take up his cross and begin to follow in my footsteps. Whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”
